What is Osteopathy?
Osteopaths believe that the healthy balance and function of our musculoskeletal system is essential to whole body health. Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy. It is drug-free and non-invasive and works on aiming to achieve the optimal health of the musculoskeletal system. This includes joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia.
It is a holistic therapy, and so considers the whole of an individual, not just the part that hurts. Although the hands-on treatment works directly on the musculoskeletal structures. Through this there can be positive effects on the nervous, circulatory and digestive systems.
Osteopathy was the first complementary therapy to have received statutory regulation by Parliament. However Osteopathy now comes under the heading of Allied Health Professional (AHP). It is one of 14 clinical disciplines that fall under this heading. AHPs have specialised expertise in diagnosing, preventing and treating conditions within their speciality. Therefore, patients can be reassured that registered Osteopaths will have completed rigorous training to meet the high standards required by this title and the General Osteopathic Council.
